The Center for Lexicography and Language Technologies was established at the Faculty of Sciences and Arts of Ilia State University in 2020. It was founded by a team of professional lexicographers who have implemented many lexicographic and corpus projects.

Vision and Mission of the Center for Lexicography and Language Technologies

According to the vision of the Center for Lexicography and Language Technologies, citizens in today's world should have access to all the information they need about language and should be able to use it to build democracy and civil society, as well as to fully realize their own intellectual potential.

The mission of the Center is to preserve cultural heritage and promote the development of the Georgian language and other languages. The Centre develops and uses modern technologies to generate high-quality language data for lexicography, electronic corpora, machine translation, artificial intelligence, and related purposes.

Goals and Objectives of the Center

The goal of the Center is:

To contribute to the development of lexicography as an interdisciplinary field in Georgia, and to this end, to conduct fundamental research on various issues of theoretical lexicography;
To intensively introduce corpus and natural language processing methods into Georgian lexicography;
To contribute to the introduction of the Georgian language into a modern technological paradigm, which implies: the full digitalization of the Georgian language, the integration of the Georgian language into international digital translation products or programs, and the preservation of the applied function of the Georgian language in all modern fields or areas.
To contribute to the creation, accumulation, and development of high-quality bilingual lexicographic and corpus material in relation to various European languages, as well as the languages ​​of neighbouring countries and countries economically closely related to Georgia.
To work on modern Georgian terminology;
To develop cooperation with leading foreign scientific institutes and centers;
Involvement of young employees, doctoral students and students of the Center in international projects.

The tasks of the Center are:

Creation of a full-fledged English-Georgian/Georgian-English machine translation program;
Accumulation of a large number of high-quality English-Georgian parallel sentences for the machine translation project;
Filling and developing English-Georgian lexicographic resources for their use in the machine translation project;
Initiating and implementing projects of bilingual academic dictionaries in relation to European languages, languages ​​of neighbouring countries, and countries economically related to Georgia;
Unification of terminological dictionaries created by the Center into a single database using the methodology and technologies of modern term banks, widening the scope of terminological work at the university with the active involvement of professors of various fields and master's and doctoral students. Encouraging terminological work in various professional associations;
Introduction to technological platforms based on artificial neural networks: their study and implementation in Georgian lexicography. A master's program "Lexicography, Terminology and Modern Technologies" was created based on the "Center for Lexicography and Language Technologies".

The "Center for Lexicography and Language Technologies" has an International Advisory Board, which includes well-known foreign scientists in several areas: metalexicography, language technologies, practical lexicography, terminology.
