Historic perspective allows for seeing clearly one particularly important feature of ethnobiological knowledge: it
was accumulating and becoming sophisticated during the prehistory of Georgia. This type of knowledge actually
underpinned the progress in traditional societies in the Ancient World. Till the end of prehistory the knowledge
existed only in this – traditional – form and the progress of precisely this form of knowledge was responsible for the
transition of traditional societies into early civilisations. Historical ethnobiology also shows that certain traditions
can be very durable and can underpin long-term sustainability and adaptability of socio-ecological systems.
