Complex Study of Psychophysiological and Psychological Correlates in ADHD Children in Georgia

The project aims to identify the effectiveness and sustainability of psychological training of children diagnosed with ADHD(Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) using objective brain research methods. This research will facilitate comprehensive study of psychophysiological and psychological aspects of ADHD. Improvement/deterioration of attention and concentration will be evaluated based on electrophysiological neuroimaging technologies-electroencephalography(EEG) and event-related potentials(ERPs) as well as psychological trainings/exercises. EEG/ERP registration will be conducted before and after the psychological training for attention enhancement to provide objectively assessment of the effect of psychological intervention on the brain dynamics and cognitive abilities. Psychological evaluation of participants will be conducted on three times(before psychological training, immediately after training and at 1year follow-up). The study will include 60 ADHD children(7-11 years old, 30boys/girls, predominantly with inattentive subtype). EEG analysis methods are based on a quantitative EEG spectral analysis paradigm. The focus will be on oscillatory EEG biomarker of ADHD-the band power ratio of Theta(4-8Hz) to low Beta(13-18Hz) activity at frontal/central sites. Additionally, EEG topographic mapping will be employed for more exploratory analysis. The ERP scenario will be compiled according to Go/No-Go test paradigm. The  attention/concentration changes will be based on psychological assessment and parental and teacher questionnaires. We will use “eeghub.ge” electronic database for the validation of the experimental findings. Under NI4OS project, EEG data collected in Georgia have been uploaded to the European Open Science Cloud for the first time. The project will expand the latest study on non-pharmacological therapeutic methods in ADHD and their implementation in Georgia, which has strong scientific and clinical impact. It will also be the first interdisciplinary and international study of ADHD in Georgia. Ivane Beritashvili Center for Experimental Biomedicine and Ilia State University(ISU) will participate in the project implementation. Georgian and international students of the Faculties of Medicine and Psychology of ISU will participate in the research. Three International researchers(2European, American) will support the project with complementary competencies and relevant experience. It will inevitably enhance the productivity and research potential of the Research Center and the University. The project is intended to raise psychophysiological research in Georgia to the international level. The exchange of knowledge and practical experience in developing new methods and comprehensive approaches will contribute to the integration of Georgian researchers, especially women(including 2young scientists), into the international scientific domain. The results will be presented at an international scientific conference, published in international peer-reviewed journals, and a hybrid workshop will be held at ISU
