Jackal (Canis aureus) in human-modified landscapes: can we coexist?

Implementer:: INSTITUTE OF ECOLOGY

Despite the active persecution, the jackal copes with the threats affecting its population better than other predators and continues to exploit new territories in Europe. Jackal in Georgia is also expanding its area not only horizontally, but also vertically, and it is increasingly found at altitudes where it was not common before. What is the reason for such versatility? The appearance of predators in the vicinity of humans has created problems for both humans and predators. Jackals attack domestic animals. In some areas, the jackal is considered a competitor for hunting species. How big is the damage caused by the jackal?

Jackals remove thousands of tons of animal waste from ecosystems every year and significantly contribute to maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Is it possible to maintain a stable jackal population and at the same time reduce the damage caused by the animal?

The information obtained will allow us to develop a jackal management plan for human-modified areas.  Such research is being conducted for the first time in the Caucasus. Its results will make a significant contribution to the study of the adaptive strategies of predators and the causes of dispersion not only in Georgia but throughout Europe. The Caucasus is one of the important points from which the jackals moved to the northern part of Europe.
