The research envisaged by the project concerns the perception of Georgia and Armenia in Western and Eastern historical sources/narratives of the Middle Ages and Early Modern period. Research questions can be formulated as follows:
How are perceived of these two countries located at the crossroads of civilizations and cultures, from both Western/European and Eastern authors?
Why or how did Georgia (Georgians) and Armenia (Armenians) attract the attention of Europeans and Easterners and how this interest is reflected in their narratives?
What are the differences and peculiarities of the Western and Eastern perceptions of Georgia and Armenia and how they are conditioned?
How do Western and Eastern sources characterize Georgians and Armenians? What can be considered as identity markers of Georgians and Armenians from their perspective?
What is the place of Georgia (Georgians) and Armenia (Armenians) in the discourse of "self" and "other" of European and Eastern medieval and early modern cultures as well as in the general civilizational context?
The project envisages the partnership of the Center of Medieval Studies (CEMM) Paul Valery University of Montpellier 3 (France) and the involvement of French scholars in the above-mentioned research. The famous French historian, emeritus professor of the University of Montpellier, Gerard Dédéyan, will be the consultant of the presented project.
There are also close academic ties with the Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, which will be the second partner organization of the project, and the deputy director of this institute, Assoc. Professor, Dr. Gor Margarian - the second consultant of the project.
The project envisages: 1) creation of the single database of Western and Eastern authors whose works discuss the history and culture of Georgians and Armenians, their anthropological characteristics in the Middle Ages and early modern times; 2) publication of a bilingual volume (Georgian-French) of scientific articles, in which the results of the academic work carried out by the of research team will be presented.
As a result of the implementation of the project, the perception of Georgia and Armenia in the Middle Ages and early modern times, a full-fledged picture reflecting their culture and peculiarities, will be presented from the perspective of Western and Eastern authors. The implementation of such a project will undoubtedly enrich the scientific knowledge about the history and culture of Georgians and Armenians and, in many cases about their shared history.
