From the history of bilingual lexicography of the 18th century (the first Italian-Georgian dictionary of medicinal plants)

The presented project envisages the study of bilingual sectoral (medical) dictionaries compiled by missionaries preserved in Georgian and foreign archives of the 18th-19th centuries and the publication of one of the outstanding examples, the Georgian-Italian dictionary dated the 18th century (protected in the S fund of the National Manuscript Center of Georgia N4742).

This dictionary is no less interesting for the cultural centre in the early global world (the European Catholic world) and the periphery (Georgian Catholicism) from the point of view of studying the two-way (and not only one-way, Eurocentric) exchange of knowledge. The lexicographical materials of the missionaries present the knowledge and experience they acquired while interacting with the local Georgian community, not only with the Catholics.
Observation of the lexicographic materials of the missionaries shows that the Catholics reflected the ancient practice of healing and medicine in Georgia with more or less intensity in all the dictionaries they compiled. As part of the project, I plan to publish the Italian-Georgian Dictionary of Medicinal Plants (S Fund N4742), research and study other Catholic lexicological materials from the point of view of the exchange of medical knowledge.
A study of documenting the Georgian medical tradition in texts compiled by Europeans of the late Middle Ages, the use of Georgian elements in their medical tradition, and the publication of relevant lexicographic works is an essential step in contemporary discussions of global studies on eighteen-century, in order to integrate Georgian and textual heritage created in Georgia.
