Investigation of the Georgian aphids (Hemiptera: Aphidoidea) using modern approaches

Implementer:: Institute of Zoology

The goals of this project are to investigate the taxonomy, faunistic and ecological characteristics of aphids distributed in Georgia.
The specific objectives of the project are:
I objective: Taxonomic study of aphids distributed in Georgia based on external morphology, morphometrics and DNA-barcoding. Preparation of the annotated list of aphids and description of new species;
II objective: Preparation of monograph about the aphids of the cultivated plants of Georgia;
III objective: Revision of the aphid collection of Dr. Alexandra Jibladze.
IV objective: Analysis of the spatial distribution of aphids distributed in Georgia;
V objective: Preparation and submission of scientific publication(s) in peer-reviewed journal(s).
After the implementation of the project we will have:
Compiled and published the first annotated list of Georgian aphids;
Newly recorded species for the faunas of Caucasus and Georgia, and species new to science;
Publication on the DNA barcoding of Georgian aphids published for the first time, and created a DNA-barcode reference library for Georgian aphid species, including the Caucasian aphid taxa, which have not been studied using molecular approaches;
Results of the project published in the peer-reviewed journal(s);
Published a monograph on the aphids of cultivated plants in Georgia;
Enriched aphid collection deposited at the Institute of Zoology of Ilia State University with newly collected specimens. A revised aphid collection of Alexandra Jibladze deposited at the Institute of Zoology of Ilia State University that adheres to modern standards;
The results of the aphid spatial distribution explain the following ecologically important issues: a) which altitudinal zones are rich in endemic taxa of the aphids in Georgia; b) how many short and long-ranged taxa of aphids occur in Georgia; c) what are the local limitation factors for the distribution of aphid diversity; d) where is the upper limit of the distribution of aphids in Georgia and what taxa occur on the ‘aphid line’.
Project results will be used by taxonomists, entomologists, invertebrate zoologists, plant protectionists, Agronomists and ecologists. Results will also be useful in the teaching of General and Agricultural Entomology, Invertebrate Zoology and Ecology courses at the universities of Georgia;
Paratypes of new species will be given to the leading museums of the world: London, Paris and Saint Petersburg Nature History Museums and will be accessible to leading specialists of the world.
