Structural Elements of Georgian Traditional Polyphony

In this project proposal, for the first time in Georgian musicology, we incorporate the methods of information technology and statistical analysis in researching the structural peculiarities of Georgian traditional music.
The main focus will be made on the interrelation between melodic-rhythmic patterns and voices with the relationship between the genre and dialectics. Other components will also be studied (see below). A method for such information modelling and statistics will help us to establish grammatical regularities of this basic event in Georgian music.
Eventually, Georgian musicology lacks monographs about Georgian folk music (the number of such monographs can be counted on fingers). Participants of this project - three ethnomusicologists and one specialist in information technology  - aim to fill this gap.
Until now, there has been no research conducted in the direction of Georgian folk music using the methods of information technology and quantitative research. Accordingly, the interdisciplinary method incorporated in the project represents a new word in Georgian ethnomusicology.
At the final stage of the project, the new typological classification of structural units of Georgian traditional music will be fulfilled, which will also imply a new sort of faceted schemes. Also, the principal investigator will work out the main scientific conclusions and hypotheses. The book demonstrating the scientific results of the research will be prepared.
During the research, the principal investigator will consult with the foreign advisor of the project.
After finishing the project Kartvelology and in particular, Georgian musicology will be enriched with work loaded with factor analysis, advanced research methodology, scientific conclusions and viewpoints. For these reasons, the work will be fundamental work and pave the way for other research in musicology. At the same time, it will add up new research topics to the activities of Georgian (or foreign) ethnomusicologists. The certain topics prepared in the frames of the project will also be relevant for international scientific conferences and publications.
This work will awaken the interest in actively using computing and statistical approach or data from other scientific disciplines in musicology.
We assume that in taking into consideration the rareness of such interdisciplinary research in today’s Kartvelology this project will attract the attention of the representatives of other scientific disciplines from the point of view of the effectiveness of such research.
We hope that this work will be a necessary achievement for the Georgian traditional music study courses at musical educational institutions.
