The study of Arabic epigraphic monuments is of special importance for the elucidation of many questions about the history of Georgia. Sometimes they represent the only written sources. They are distinguished by their great accuracy in recording facts and allow ascertaining a number of valuable historical data. They represent reliable primary written sources of the past, which were not affected by corrections of the copyists. They have great importance for researching historic political changes in the history of Georgia as well as identifying the ethnoreligious composition of one or another region of the country at various stages of history.
The study of the Arabic epigraphic material of Georgia is indebted to the late Prof.  Tsisia Kakhiani, who was the only specialist in this field in Georgia. 
Our objective is to study, on the basis of the archival materials of Prof. Kakhiani, the Arabic epigraphic monuments of Tbilisi and, at the same time, to research into the newly discovered inscriptions.
The importance of research is determined by the uniqueness of the material preserved in Prof. Kakhiani’s archives. Part of the inscriptions recorded here is lost at present. In addition, Arabic inscriptions discovered on the territory of Old Tbilisi in recent years are sometimes in danger of being damaged or ruined as a result of repair works in the city. A clear example is an inscription, dated to the 2nd c. of Hegira (8th c. AD), discovered during archaeological excavations in Pushkin Street in 2012.  At present, it is possible to decipher and study the given inscription only by means of the unique photographic material preserved in the private archives of the authors of the present Project.
Our goal is to bring together the studied Arabic inscriptions of Tbilisi and to offer their new analysis, as well as to research the newly discovered inscriptions which have not been the object of scholarly study yet.  As a result of the Project implementation, first of all, the materials related to Tbilisi Arabic inscriptions, preserved in Prof. T.Kakhiani’s archives, will be studied. Deciphering of the manuscripts, digitalization of these manuscripts as well as photo and graphic sources are planned.  Within the Project, fieldwork will also be carried out to record and decipher as far as possible the hitherto unexplored inscriptions existing in Tbilisi. The obtained material will be arranged chronologically and discussed in the context of the history of Tbilisi.
