Documents about Georgia in the Archives and Libraries of Iran

The project envisages location, classification, translation and scientific study of the existing Georgia-related
material in Iran’s archives and libraries. According to confirmed information many unknown Georgia-related
documents are kept in Iran’s archives and libraries putting into scientific circulation of which will undoubtedly
enhance our knowledge about Georgia’s past and various historical aspects of its relations with Iran.
There is a unique opportunity today of obtaining and studying of this material. This opportunity has been
created thanks to close ties between the staff of the G.Tsereteli institute of oriental studies of the Ilia State
University and Iranian libraries and research centers, supported by the office for cultural affairs of the Iranian
embassy in Georgia and a long activity of the Principal investigator of the proposed project Nikoloz
Nakhutsrishvili as Advisor to the embassy of Georgia in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
For the implementation of the Project links have been already established with various Iranian archives and
libraries (Golestan Palace-Museum, Archive of the Ministry of the Foreign affairs of IRI, the National Archive and
Library in Tehran, the libraries of the universities of Tehran, Isfahan and Gilan, etc. where, according to the staff
of these organizations, various Georgia-related material is being kept. It has been confirmed to us that several
collections of archival records published in Iran also include Georgia-related documents.
As a result of project implementation Georgia-related hitherto unknown documents from Iran’s archives and
libraries will be studied and translated into Georgian and English (primarily Persian language documents, but
according to information available to us they also come in European languages and in Russian. And it is not
improbable that documents will be found in Georgian too). The project implementation is also important as the
obtained material will be translated not only into Georgian, but into English as well with appropriate explanatory
notes and findings. Therefore such a publication will be accessible to foreign scholars interested in particular
periods of Georgian history and various aspects of Iran-Georgia relations. The presented material will enable both
Georgian and foreign scholars to enhance their own research with new material or start new research related to
specific issues.
