Multilingual annotated electronic parallel corpus-based edition of “the Book of Tobit”

The project is a kind of continuation of my doctoral thesis “The Georgian translation of the Book of Tobit
(the issues of text’s origin, history and translation technique)”.
The study revealed that the Georgian version of the Book of Tobit is translated from Greek and bears the
so-called GIII text, which has only partly come down to us in Greek and Syriac languages (d [6:9–12:fin], Sy [7:11
καὶ νῦν – 12:fin]), varies between GI and GII and has its own variants as well. The Old Georgian translation is
preserved completely and is typologically very similar to GIII throughout the entire text. This supports the
assumption that a complete textual type representing GIII should have existed from which Tobit was translated
into Georgian.
In the frame of the project a complete parallel electronic edition of the Greek (three textual forms),
Armenian and Georgian versions will be prepared, which, at the same time, will be annotated (each word will be
annotated grammatically and English translation will be given as well).
The digital edition will be prepared according to the standard of scientific electronic edition of the text
– TEI (Text Encoding Initiative). In the frame of the project encoded files of the mentioned manuscripts (their
metadata and text) will be prepared in XML format, on the basis of which a database and website will be
constructed for the parallel texts. The redaction focus of the parallel corpus-based edition of the Book of Tobit is
determined by the doctoral research, consequently, the digital edition will demonstrate the findings of the
research.
XML coding of each manuscript, apart from the standard minimum requirements of encoding (metadata
and text), will be enriched by linked data and extensive linguistic annotation. Each word will be tagged and
corresponding dictionary form and lemma will be indicated. According to the standard encoded will be as
structural elements of the text and palaeographical characteristics, as well as proper names (anthroponyms and
toponyms). Such approach will enable us to create and locate on the website a variety of index pages.
Finally, on the website will be presented: text-corpus, so-called text-image linking environment and
section of maps. Each page will be equipped with a detailed search tool.
