The aim of the work is an integrated study of different aspects of Iranian politics towards the South Caucasian
countries; how the policy towards the South Caucasus corresponds to the general frames of the Iranian foreign
policy and what its peculiarities in the region are. It is presented small survey of the history of Iran and its
historical interactions with South Caucasus. Attention is paid to the perception of the role of foreign actors in
the region by Iran; to the dynamics of economic relations; to the influence of the sanctions imposed to Iran on
its relations with South Caucasian countries; to the Caucasian diasporas in Iran and vice-versa; to the
importance of the South Caucasus as transit route for Iran; to the problems connected with the demarcation of
the Caspian sea; to the factors contributing actual defeat of Iran in the struggle for pipelines. It is outlined
different realities and different opportunities for Iran in relations with three South Caucasian countries
