Analyzing the presence of leading Georgian political parties on social networks, Ongoing

Implementer:: Business Research Centre

The given research aims to examine and analyze how and for what purposes key political parties/self-governing entities/ actors utilize social media, whether for distribution of important political messages, persuading/influencing (the viewpoints of the) potential electorate or attracting/acquiring new political supporters. Moreover, we are interested in exploring whether the content, nature, dynamics/intensity of interactions vary across parties during passive and active (non-election, pre-election, during and post) election periods.
It is therefore essential to analyze the online social networks of key political actors and the content distributed/generated through such online networks. The key objective of the current study is to map the composition (homophily-heterogeneity) of both official/formal and informal networks (degree centrality and power, closeness centrality, betweenness centrality, structural holes and bridges in the scope of social media pages/groups) of political parties and analyze the content (social media buzz) generated both by key actors and users/followers, given that both types of networks could affect the level of political participation, activism and orientation of potential electorate to some extent. More precisely, the quantity of fans/followers, poll-related interactions derived from Facebook (number of new posts, comments, shares, likes per post; favourited posts, replies and re-posts), content (sentiments classified under three main categories: positive, negative or neutral ways), frequency and reciprocity of interactions within closed online networks of political parties will be examined. In addition, the word clouds would be created based on the most frequently used words in posts published on Georgian parties’ official Facebook Pages. Also, the gender and demographic structure of Georgian political party Fanpages will be analyzed.
Yet another primary goal of this research is to create the research instrument- the online platform- for collecting, assembling and analyzing different sources derived from diverse social media platforms. The given research project will shed light on how political actors use social media channels and how large their audience is, identifying the ratio of true and fake users.
