ეკოლოგიის ინსტიტუტი
კავკასიის რეგიონი შედის მსოფლიო ბიომრავალფეროვნების ცხელი წერტილების სიაში. კავკასიის ბუნება გამოირჩევა განსაკუთრებული მრავალფეროვნებით. აქ შენარჩუნებულია ცხოველებისა და მცენარეების ისეთი სახეობები, რომლებიც დიდი ხანია გადაშენდა ევროპისა და დასავლეთი აზიის სხვა ნაწილებში. იმავდროულად, მზარდი ეკონომიკისა და გარემოზე ზეწოლის პირობებში კავკასიის უნიკალურ ცხოველთა სამყაროსა და მცენარეულობას მნიშვნელოვანი საფრთხე ემუქრება.
ჩვენი რეგიონის ბუნების უნიკალურობა გამოიხატება ენდემური (მხოლოდ ჩვენთან გავრცელებული) სახეობების უჩვეულოდ დიდ რაოდენობაში; იმ ცხოველების, მცენარეებისა და ლანდშაფტების არსებობაში, რომლებიც აღარ არსებობს ევროპისა და დასავლეთი აზიის სხვა რეგიონებში; შინაური ცხოველებისა და მცენარეების სახეობების უჩვეულო მრავალფეროვნებაში. კავკასია ცივილიზაციის ერთ-ერთ უძველეს კერას წარმოადგენს.
ამასთან დაკავშირებით, საქართველოს და კავკასიის რეგიონს ესაჭიროება მაღალი კვალიფიკაციის მეტი სპეციალისტი ეკოლოგიისა და გარემოს დაცვის სფეროში და მაღალი დონის მეტი კვლევა ეკოლოგიის დარგში. ილიას უნივერსიტეტის ეკოლოგიის ინსტიტუტი ემსახურება ამ ამოცანის გადაწყვეტას. აქ ტარდება თანამედროვე დონის კვლევები ცხოველებისა და მცენარეების ეკოლოგიაში, გამოყენებითი კვლევები სახეობათა დაცვის სფეროში, ტყის რესურსების კვლევა, ენდემური ცხოველების სახეობების გენეტიკური ანალიზი და თავად კავკასიის მოსახლეობის წარსულის შესწავლა ეკოლოგიური და გენეტიკური მეთოდების კომბინაციით.
ინსტიტუტის პროფესორები, მკვლევრები და სტუდენტები შეისწავლიან ხმელეთისა და ზღვის ფაუნას, მაღალმთიანეთის ფლორას, ეკოლოგიისა და ევოლუციური ბიოლოგიის ფუნდამენტურ საკითხებს. საკმაოდ მდიდარია ინსტიტუტის მატერიალური ბაზა. სამეცნიერო კვლევას და სტუდენტების მომზადებას ემსახურება საველე ბაზები შავ ზღვაზე და საქართველოს მაღალმთიანეთში, ასევე - თანამედროვე მოლეკულურ-გენეტიკური და კომპიუტერული მოდელირების ლაბორატორია.
ინსტიტუტი ახორციელებს სამ ხანგრძლივ კვლევით პროგრამას: მაღალმთის ეკოსისტემების კვლევა, მსხვილი ძუძუმწოვრების ეკოლოგია და კონსერვაცია, რაოდენობრივი ეკოლოგიისა და ევოლუციური კვლევა.
ეკოლოგიის ინსტიტუტი ავითარებს საბაკალავრო, სამაგისტრო და სადოქტორო პროგრამებს შესაბამის დარგებში. ინსტიტუტის პროფესორები ამზადებენ ბაკალავრებს ეკოლოგიაში; მომავალ მეცნიერ-მაგისტრებს ეკოლოგიაში, გამოყენებით სპეციალობებში (ტყის მეცნიერებასა და ბუნებრივი რესურსების მართვაში) და გამოყენებით გენეტიკაში; ასევე – ბიზნეს-ადმინისტრაციის მაგისტრებს მდგრად მეტყევეობასა და ბუნებრივი რესურსების მენეჯმენტში. სტუდენტები სწავლობენ ცხოველებისა და მცენარეების საველე კვლევის მეთოდებს, საველე ექსპერიმენტის დაგეგმარებას, ცხოველების აღრიცხვას ხმელეთსა და ზღვაში, მეტყევეობის საველე და ანალიტიკურ მეთოდებს, GIS მოდელირებას, მოლეკულურ-გენეტიკური მონაცემების მიღებასა და ანალიზს, მონაცემთა სტატისტიკურ დამუშავებას კომპიუტერის დახმარებით, სამეცნიერო ტექსტზე მუშაობას და მრავალ სხვას. სწავლება მჭიდროდაა გადაჯაჭვული იმ კვლევებთან, რომელთა სრულუფლებიანი მონაწილეები ინსტიტუტის სტუდენტები არიან.
